Travel | 5 days in London - Part 1 (Wandering around Notting Hill • Discovering the National Gallery)

Depuis septembre, mon amie Marie habite à Londres pour ses études et, sachant que je suis totalement amoureuse de cette ville elle m'a gentiment proposé de m'accueillir chez elle quand je voulais. Nous nous sommes arrangées et avons décidé que la semaine du 8 janvier était la meilleure pour que je vienne puisqu'elle était disponible à ce moment-là. Une fois les dates fixées j'ai donc pris mes billets et le 9 janvier j'étais à la Gare du Nord, impatiente de partir. 

Since September, my friend Marie lives in London for her studies and, knowing that I am totally in love with this city, she kindly offered to welcome me at her flat whenever I wanted. We arranged and decided that the week of January 8th was the best for me to come since she was available at that time. Once the dates were set I bought my tickets and on the January 9th I was at the Gare du Nord, impatient to leave.

Avant de continuer mon récit je suis obligée de vous raconter une petite anecdote drôle à partager mais moins à vivre : au moment même où j'arrivais à  Gare du Nord, deux gendarmes m'arrêtent alors je panique un peu et me demande ce que j'ai fait. En fait, ils m'ont juste signalé que ma valise avait perdue une roue. Le voyage commençait bien. Pour la faire rouler, je l'ai donc retournée dans l'autre sens ce qui a étonné bien des personnes. À part ce petit incident (pas franchement très pratique on va se l'avouer) mon train est bien parti à l'heure (11h13) et je suis arrivée à Londres à 12h39 (heure locale).

Before continuing my story I am obliged to tell you a funny anecdote to share but less to live: the moment I arrived at Gare du Nord, two gendarmes stoped me, I was a little worried and wondered what I did wrong. In fact, they just pointed out to me that my suitcase had lost a wheel. The trip was starting well! To roll it, I returned it in the other direction which surprised many people. Apart from this small incident (not really practical we will admit it) my train was on time (11:13) and I arrived in London at 12:39 (local time).

Comme à mon habitude, je me suis rendue au Pain Quotidien où j'ai mangé une brioche accompagnée d'un café au lait. Ensuite j'ai pris le métro direction Latimer Road pour déposer ma valise cassée chez mon amie Marie chez qui j'ai séjourné (elle était en examen à ce moment-là alors c'est un de ses colocataires qui m'a ouvert).  

As usual, I went to Le Pain Quotidien where I ate a brioche with a latte. Then I took the metro to Latimer Road to drop my broken suitcase at my friend Marie who I stayed at (she was having a test at that time so one of her roommates opened me).

Malgré le temps nuageux (il pleuvait très peu alors je n'ai même pas prit mon parapluie), j'ai décidé de me balader dans le quartier au lieu d'immédiatement prendre les transports. J'ai marché de Latimer Road jusqu'à Bayswater en passant par Portobello road. 

Despite the cloudy weather (it was raining a bit but I chose not to take my umbrella), I decided to walk in the neighborhood instead of immediately take the subway. I walked from Latimer Road to Bayswater via Portobello Road.

Puis, enfin, j'ai pris le métro pour aller dans le centre. En sortant du métro il pleuvait un peu plus qu'avant mais j'ai quand même décidé de marcher sans vraiment savoir exactement où j'allais. Je suis finalement arrivée par hasard à Trafalgar Square et j'ai décidé de me rendre à la National Gallery où je n'étais encore jamais allée.

Then, finally, I took the subway to go to the center. It was raining a little more than before but I still decided to walk without really knowing exactly where I was going. I finally arrived by chance at Trafalgar Square and decided to go to the National Gallery where I had never been before.

Ce qui est assez incroyable à Londres c'est que presque tous les musées sont gratuits. On y rentre presque comme si on allait au supermarché pour faire ses courses. Je n'ai pas vraiment suivi de parcours en particulier à l'intérieur de la National Gallery, j'ai marché de salles en salles, émerveillée. J'ai pris beaucoup de photos pour avoir des souvenirs et pour les partager avec vous cependant, je vous conseille vivement de vous y rendre si vous êtes à Londres. 

What is pretty amazing in London is that almost all the museums are free. You go there almost as if you were going to the supermarket to shop. I did not really follow a particular route inside the National Gallery, I walked from room to room, totally amazed. I took a lot of photos to have memories and to share them with you. However, I strongly advise you to go there if you are in London.

J'ai donc fait une sélection parmi toutes mes photos et je les ai triées par siècle parce que cela me semblait plus logique. Je dois avouer que cela m'a pris beaucoup plus de temps que prévu et que je ne suis pas totalement satisfaite... Je n'ai pas été découragée pour autant!

So I made a selection from all my photographs and sorted them by century because it made more sense to me. I must admit that it took me a lot longer than expected and I'm actually not totally satisfied but I was not discouraged so here they are!

Pour finir la journée, nous sommes allées au pub Prince Albert où nous avons bu une bière et parlé pendant un moment avant d'aller faire quelques courses pour le diner du soir.

To end the day, we went to the Prince Albert Pub where we had a beer and talked for a while before going out for some evening shopping.
